An Empty Tomb and a Second Chance

Mark 16:1-8

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome purchased [sweet-smelling] spices, so that they might go and anoint Him. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. 3 And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 Looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, though it was extremely large. 5 Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right, wearing a [long, stately] white robe; and they were amazed and bewildered. 6 And he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen; He is not here. See, [here is] the place where they laid Him. 7 But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see Him there, just as He told you.’” 8 They went out and fled from the tomb, for they were seized with trembling and astonishment; and they said nothing [about it] to anyone, because they were afraid.

I. A SECOND CHANCE IS PAID FOR.

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him

we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the

unrighteous, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the

flesh but made alive in the spirit.” 1 Peter 3:18

More Examples: Exodus 2:11-15, 2 Samuel 11, Jonah

REFLECTION: What does it mean by Jesus ‘paid for’ my sins?

II. A SECOND CHANCE IS PERSONAL.

"This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and

Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” John 17:3

“The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The

gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice.

He calls His own sheep by name and leads them out.” John 10:2-3

REFLECTION: How is God shown Himself to me in a personal way?

III. A SECOND CHANCE IS PRIVATE.

“…that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was

buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.” 1 Cor 15:3-5

“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the

truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears,

and He will tell you what is yet to come.” John 16:13

REFLECTION: How has God transformed me from the inside-out?

IV. A SECOND CHANCE IS POSSIBLE.

“Therefore if any person be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are

passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

“In Him (Jesus) we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of

sins, according to the riches of His grace.” Ephesians 1:7

REFLECTION: What is God still calling me to do despite “my issues”?
