MEMORIAL DAY 2021

By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to

lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods

and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does

God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but

in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:16-18

3 THOUGHTS ON SACRIFICIAL LOVE:

1. IT IS POSSIBLE TO KNOW THE LOVE OF GOD?

“By this we know love” vs. 16a

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that

you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his

glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great

power for us who believe.” Ephesians 1:18-19

SCRIPTURE: Psalms 119:18, Acts 26:18

2. CHRIST CRUCIFIED IS THE GREATEST DEMONSTRATION OF SACRIFICIAL LOVE.

“By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us” vs. 16b

“For one will scarcely die for a righteous person though perhaps for

a good person one would dare even to die but God shows his love

for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 5:7-8

“For this reason, the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that

I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of

my own accord.” John 10:17-18

SCRIPTURE: Ephesians 3:18-19, Hebrews 12:2

3. WE CAN SHOW GOD’S LOVE TO A BROKEN WORLD.

“…and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers” vs. 16c

“But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet

closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little

children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. vs. 17-18

SCRIPTURE: Hebrews 11:35-39, Romans 12:9-10

“People talk of the sacrifice I have made in spending so much of my life in Africa. Can that be called a sacrifice which is simply paid back as a small part of a great debt owing to our God, which we can never repay?... It is emphatically no sacrifice. Say rather it is a privilege.” ~Missionary David Livingstone
