Saturday Evening Message
James 4
THE SACRED ASSEMBLY
Matthew 4
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’
7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’
11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
Acts 10:34-38
Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism 35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that He jealously longs for the spirit He has caused to dwell in us? But He gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. JAMES 4:5-8
5 THOUGHTS ON RESISTING THE DEVIL :
A. TO RESIST MEANS TO STAND IN OPPOSITION
“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.”Eph 6:13
B. WE ARE TO OUTWARDLY RESIST EVERY FORCE OF EVIL
“Don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.” James 4:4
“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
C. WHY RESIST? UNDERSTAND THE DEVIL WANTS YOU DEAD. “The thief comes only to steal and KILL and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” John 10:10
D. THE POWER OF HELL WAS BROKEN BY THE CROSS
“And being found in appearance as a man He humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name” Philippians 2:9-11
E. THE ENEMY HAS NO LEGAL RIGHT TO STAY: HE’S GOT TO GO!
“When you were dead in your sins …God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; He has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross!” Colossians 2:13-15

JAMES 4:5-8
5 THOUGHTS ON SUBMITTING TO GOD :
A. TO SUBMIT MEANS TO OBEY, BE SUBJECT TO, TO PUT UNDER OBEDIENCE “…and going a little farther He fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” Matthew 26:39
B. WE ARE TO INWARDLY SUBMIT ‘OUR FLESH’ OR ‘OUR BODIES’ TO GOD. “But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” 1 Cor 9:27
“ …in view of God’s mercy, offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:1-2
C. WHY SUBMIT? GOD’S PLAN IS ABUNDANT LIFE (STARTING NOW!)
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”Jeremiah 1:5
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jer 29:11
“Perhaps you were born for such a time as this.” Esther 4:14
D. THE CROSS OF CHRIST GIVES YOU ACCESS TO GOD ALMIGHTY
“For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21
E. YOU CAN WALK IN GRACE & FAVOR FOR ALL YOUR DAYS
“To Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy— to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore!” Jude 1:24-25
